Hi, I’m Gunja Bhatt, a children’s book illustrator based in Reading, UK, originally from India.

I create illustrations for picture books and chapter books using a blend of traditional media such as watercolours, gouache, and inks, alongside digital techniques for flexibility and refinement. I love building visual worlds filled with emotion, atmosphere, and expressive characters that connect with young readers.

A LITTLE STORY

As a child, I was captivated by folk stories, classical animated cartoons, and the colourful world of Indian art. That early fascination slowly grew into a lifelong habit of drawing, observing, and telling stories through pictures.

I began my career working at major animation and design studios in India, where I worked as a senior illustrator, comic artist, and storyboard artist. Over time, I transitioned into freelancing, especially after becoming a mother, which allowed me to shape a more personal and meaningful creative path.

My journey has taken me from India to the Bay Area in California, and now to the UK, where I focus on illustrating picture books and developing my own stories.

In recent years, I completed the Pathways into Children’s Publishing programme (2023–2024), where I was mentored by award-winning illustrator David Litchfield and guided by leading publishers including Walker Books and Penguin Random House. This experience helped me refine my voice, strengthen my portfolio, and deepen my connection with the children’s publishing world.
